Day 24 – Late nights cause hard mornings.

Day 24 – Late nights cause hard mornings.

A piece of advice/information, use it don’t use it; after having a really late night on a Thursday an early Friday morning doesn’t work too well.  We discovered and rediscovered that this morning.

Due to the fact mentioned above we were all really tired today and that lead to a quiet day… well outside of the office life that is.  Because as it goes, the day that you are tired would translate into an insane day of work right…

Anyway we got home, had a something to eat and then got into bed as early-ish.

Day 23 – 12 years and counting.

Day 23 – 12 years and counting.

Today was the celebration of the 12th birthday of the company that we are visiting in Pune.  We were not exactly too sure what to expect, so we went as comfortable and open minded as possible.  After almost 1 hour of driving we finally reached the spot where the party was held.
The place was amazingly beautiful.  And everyone was in the mood for a good party.  One of the guys told us that they prefer a Western party because they have the Indian life everyday…  We didn’t complain at all.

The office party:
The speeches started.  There were four people in the crowd that felt completely lost, pretty much, the entire time.  Those four people were Hein, Kaishni, Lourens and I…  The speeches were all in Hindi and Mahratti, I think there might have been another language or two, but I am pretty sure English and Afrikaans were not one of them.  Then at some point they realised that there were 4 South Africans in the room and the fun started.  The MC of the party asked us to come to the front…  Yes and that is exactly when the night got interesting; he asked us to do an enactment of a Bollywood movie.  Now I am not sure which movie it was (it could have been all of them mixed together).  Hein, Lourens and I had to try and get Kaishni’s attention while she had to try as hard as possible to ignore us.  Lourens won at the end with his awesome “Lay on the beach with a smile” move.  Shortly after the “SA-Bollywood” moment they had a “who has the most spikey hair” contest.  I am proud to say that South Africa took the gold medal there (yes I was the participant).
So eventually the speeches and jokes were done and that is when the real fun started.  Now as far as I know Indians are pretty famous for their love of dancing, and sure as life they showed it on the dance floor.  I think we danced for about an hour then we took a quick dinner break before heading back.  We eventually left the party venue at around 1am…

Our ride home was a bit more interesting, we had to make two trips because there was only one car left and we were 7 people.  The guy that took us home (Ashish) drives a Ford Figo this caused a feeling of nostalgia for me… I miss groenie.

When we got home we had a relaxing coffee break before hitting the hay.  This is when we noticed (and sorry for the sensitive readers) that Gert had passed away.  Sorry Julle.

PS...  Happy Birthday to our friends at the India office! and "Many happy returns."

Day 22 - Nope... not so too much

Day 22 - Nope... not so too much

Another awesomely quiet day.  That is why you waited so long for this one… I had to try and figure something out.  I think the most noteworthy thing that happened was the fact that we woke up on time.

Day 21 – Cheerz for now number 5.

Day 21 – Cheerz for now number 5.

We had to say goodbye to the 5th member of team South Africa today.  It was quite a battle to keep Lourens from jumping into Mark’s suitcase.  Sorry Lourens, we know you miss the wife and kiddies, but you are stuck with us for a few more days.

So last night we heard about the band that will be playing at the Hard Rock Café next Saturday:  Poets of the fall.  They are a rock band form Finland. I must admit I never heard them, or of them, before last night.  So we did some research and then got our hands on their latest album Temple of Thought.  After listening to only the first 3 songs of the album we (Hein, Kaishni and I) fell in love with their music.  So guess where we are going on Saturday? (No guesses needed right)
Poets of the fall will be the first international band I see live.  I’ve been to quite a few local shows in South Africa, but don’t worry guys; I will not be taking notes to compare the hometown guys to the Finnish guys (ons weet in elk geval wie sal wen).

Dinner once again was some pizza.  Well done gang I think we are converting Lourens to the “junk food” culture.
Also we decided today that prices regarding PS remotes in SA are really, really sad in comparison to the prices in both India and Dubai.
That was about the day, we will all be going to bed with POTF songs in our ears tonight.

Day 20 – a Softer Hard Rock

Day 20 – a Softer Hard Rock

Well, let’s skip the part where I tell you Mondays aren’t fun.  This one was!  We started the day off on a dullish note but as the day progressed it got a ton better.

Let’s start with a story shall we…  Kaishni forgot that we are in the month of August, nothing special to that; I would just like to mention it.  She was hoping that we could still be in July… nope sorry Kaishni we are in August and we are in India for the entire August.  So there we were sitting and enjoying a cup of tea on the balcony when suddenly (insert dramatic pause here) …
A woman broke the door off of a microwave!  Well played microwave-lady, well played.  After the pulses slowed down we decided that lunch would be the perfect next step.  This was perfect because there was some lunch in the meeting room that is known as “Mark’s office”.  While having lunch we made a new friend, his name is Gerbrecht he is a fast moving little guy, perfect for travel convenience… also he is an actual mouse.  He provided us with some laughs cause Kaishni (again) got quite the fright when she saw the little critter.

The day at the office ended and then came the good part…  Hard Rock Café.  We wanted to go and show Mark what was happening there.  After all the stories we have been telling him, I think his expectations were pretty high.  Here I should emphasise that we have been punting the good music and good food since the first day of his arrival.  The food made the cut, it was even better than we said… but the music sounded a little more like the Soft Rock Café.  But after asking around we heard that it was due to the fact that most people don’t really want to rock very hard on a Monday.  We enjoyed it nonetheless and of course I had to have they Legendary 10 oz Burger, which sounded a lot more impressive before we heard that it was only a 284 gram burger… but awesome tasting regardless.

I also got a cool piece of “Hard Rock Café Merchandise”.  I just got something small so see the attached picture.  But I will be getting a cool shirt and a nice pin before I go back home.

After the meal we were standing outside waiting for our driver to pick us up when we found Gert’s cousin.  So you would remember Gert, our pet spider at the apartment, his cousin Johan is about double his size and also his web was about 8 times bigger than the web of Gert.

Well that was the day.

Day 19 – Go Carts.

Day 19 – Go Carts.

We got up early today for a trip to the waterfall view point… only to realize that we had the time wrong by one hour.  We decided to use the time for something constructive: breakfast.  We went over to Mark’s hotel and enjoyed a pretty awesome layout there.  The eggs are great, but maybe give the pork sausages a skip…?

After breakfast we drove about 30 min before getting the rest of the guys at the ¼ mark.  By this time we started playing some games in the car… yes “I spy with my little eye” was the beginner and then we moved over to something a little more socially acceptable:  “I’m going camping and I am taking a…” well that was fun for the first 2 hours… and yes we didn’t even reach 2 thirds of the way.  We stopped for a cold drink and some nature calls and then we got under way again.  By the time we reached 3 hours of driving and still being stuck in traffic we decided to give it up for a bad job and head back.  That was when the fun started.

We stopped at a Go Cart track that we saw on like hour 2 or something.  As we approached the track it looked really sad, the carts seemed to be going really, really slow.  We decided to give it a go in any case, because otherwise the entire day would have been a waist without a try.  We got on the carts… and then all hell broke loose; in a good way of course.  The speed that we saw was only due to the other guys not pushing the cars to the limit.  We did.  We had about 4 minor accidents and one of the cars had a break down halfway through.  Mark had a bump of note.  Seriously I think we should give him a certificate for the show he put on there.  We will upload the video of this at some point then I shall share the link. *

After the Go Carting we went to a pretty famous restaurant where we had some true traditional Indian food.  The flavour was explosive!  It tasted good, but I don’t think any one of us tasted anything after the 3rd or 4th bite…  Also the el-Torro we had beforehand didn’t help too much.

The meal was awesome, but the drive back not so much.  Our driver was driving like a bat out of hell.  So one of the guys told us it would be a 45min drive, we didn’t believe him due to the traffic on our way there… so I think the driver was trying to prove the other guy’s point by pushing it as hard as possible.  But even with his Michael Schumacher racing skill it took us 1 hour 5min and yes we timed it.

When we got home we just fell over and drifted off to dream land as smoothly as possible.

Day 18 – Lift OFF

Day 18 – Saturday

Yet another day that started quite slowly… Now that I think about it, a lot of our days start this way. But no one is complaining so it is okay.  Mark got a game of golf in today, none of us are really golf players so we decided to stay home and “miff”.  As far as Saturdays go, it seems like Hein has the most energy.  Hein and Kaishni caught a Rickshaw and drove into the sunrise to get some groceries and some lunch.

By the time Hein and Kaishni got back I just got up, I think it might have been the smell of food that got me up for good.  Lourens and I later decided that we should also make an attempt to get out into the streets so we found the closest (yes two men) toy shop.  We bought ourselves RC helicopters just for the fun of it.  For the rest of the afternoon Hein, Lourens and I basically played with the RC toys until bed time came along.

Except for the RC helicopters today was almost as quiet as day 9 and 10.  I think the late night before finished up all or our will power to do something major today.  Also grabbing an early night might help for the plans we have tomorrow.

Day 17 – Hotel Pune

Day 17 – Hotel Pune, such a lovely place.

Even though I like Mondays, Fridays seem to still take the top seat.  Also the fact that Friday is basically the second day of the working week for us it makes it just that extra little bit more awesome.

For lunch (another contributor to the awesome Friday) we went to Mark’s hotel for lunch.  As a qualified burger lover, in my opinion, they do have quite a good burger.  Something that was interesting to see at the hotel was that if you order some bread you need to ask for butter, it doesn’t come standard.  But all in all the hotel lunch experience was quite good.

Mark came to our apartment after work.  We had some Mc Donalds for dinner and then showed Mark our Ping Pong game.  The night was awesome.  No animals got hurt in the making of the night.  Also we introduced Mark to Gert.  He wasn’t so accepting of our new friend.  By the time we were done with eating and playing our game, most of the Rickshaws were gone so Lourens and I had to walk almost a block with Mark to find a rickshaw… at 12 at night, and yes it was safe, relative to India and SA.

Day 16 – Soho

Day 16 – Soho

Today really felt like a Monday after the public holiday yesterday, so we treated the day accordingly.  We started off as slow as possible and then we saw something cool – another South African.  Mark, one of our managers, joined us in India today; he brought a taste of home along.  There was a small welcoming meeting… let’s hear it for awkward silences…

“                                           “

Anyway, we caught up on everything that has been happening at the office back in SA and then we decided to check out of the office for some dinner.  Mark recommended a place called Soho… they have some awesome food there.  Lourens wanted to shoot himself and the chef when he got his (what seemed like boiled) chops.  We also taught some of the guys from Team India how to play coinage, which seems super unfair when people who don’t drink play along…   After dinner we found a small club just behind the Restaurant (our first clubbing experience).  It was pretty cool, loud music only two women in the club… again can we hear it for awkward moments…?

After the 15min club time we got home and caught an early night for the Friday/Tuesday to come in the morning…

Day 15 – Independence Day

Day 15 – Independence Day

On the day off I follow my usual tradition… sleeping late is the route I take, but no worries, not the same late as on a weekend. By 10 we are up and ready to… sit and wait for 1pm.  So come 1pm we jumped on 2 rickshaws and made our way back to the InOrbit mall.  Hein and Lourens were not too fond of the Spa idea so they left Kaishni and myself there and wondered off into the mall.  I decided to get a little more than a simple haircut; I also went for a facial… I can totally understand why women like going to the spa for a facial.  We spent almost three and a half hours at the spa… totally worth it.  After that we again realized that having lunch might be a good idea, Hein and Lourens found an awesome little stand that makes chicken hotdogs with cheese chips.  It was great until I almost threw Kaishni with my cheese chips, complete accident I promise.

Hein finally found the shoes that he was looking for; this put him in a rather good mood as he usually doesn’t like shopping for shoes too much.  We also found an Ice Rink in the mall – we will definitely be coming back here.  Again we went into way more toy shops than any of us belong in with no kids around.

Also just a side note, I think Hein and I are being conditioned (mini mouse: L.O.L.)…

On our way back home we found some adventurous rickshaw drivers… they decided to have a dice home, in doing so Hein and Lourens’ driver drove through 2 manholes and almost tipped their rickshaw… nerves were shattered but they seemed to be okay by the time we got home.  Back home we sat and caught our breath for about 25 min (Kaishni used this time to ditch us) then we decided to go back to the Phoenix mall… again… the third time today… in a mall…  At least the main purpose for this trip was food and believe it or not, Lourens fell for the pizza trick for the second day in a row.  While sitting at the Pizza Hut I saw a girl that looked just like a friend of mine (she also blogs and I think only she will know who I am talking about here) you can do it.

Then we could finish off the day with these words:  “Happy Independence day India.”  Deep breath : “ We are half way through guys!!!”

Day 14 - SPAR...ish

Day 14 – SPARish

Hello slow day…  Hein was still feeling sick this morning, so he stayed at home.  So something we learn today is that when a member of closely formed “pack of four” is wounded and at home, it has an effect on everyone in the group.  Kaishni actually felt a little wounded for his sake until about 12 in the day.  Don’t worry though, they both survived.

One thing that we picked up since we got here is that they have some sort of breaking news almost every day.  Today the union minister (Vilasrao Deshmukh) passed away at age 67… it seemed a bit sad.
Now on another note, tomorrow will be a public holiday in India.  The 15th of August is known as Independence Day in India.  So the guys here are planning some serious partying.  But also we saw (again in breaking news) that there is some terrorist group planning on hijacking a plane tomorrow… so once again security was tightened up almost everywhere that you could want to go.  I’m just saying, the planning couldn’t have been too great if everyone in the country knew about the said planning…

And again we decided to have some pizza for lunch… it ended up being dinner also.  We are kind of losing our “lus” for food.  When we got home Hein told us about his “Eating lunch on the stairs” experience:  After his walk to the bank earlier today he got back and knocked for them to open (yes we cannot open for ourselves, not because we are lazy, just because they keep the key) and they couldn’t hear him… after about 30min (give or take) he decided to put some loud music on so that they would hear him more clearly.

We also heard about a SPAR in the InOrbit mall, we decided to go and have a look at what they have there and maybe get a taste of home.  So if you know anything about South Africans, we like our braai, this is not something that should be toyed with in our minds.  So one of the guys here told us that we would find a braai and some braai meat there…  All I can say is:  NO!  SPAR in India is not even equivalent to the small little Portugese shop down the road from the house I grew up in, in Glenharvie…  It was sad.  At least they had a hairdryer, so Kaishni had a smile after the shopping experience.  We also found a Spa today; that will have to be included in our day off tomorrow.

Day 13 – Ping Pong

Day 13 – Ping Pong

I will emphasize one more time that Mondays in India are not as awesome as usual…  Time for some of my personal philosophy:  I like Mondays in general as I believe that Mondays are the most un-liked days in the week, so that translates into Mondays having much love.  Think about it, everyone loves Fridays, Saturdays are awesome.  So I decided to like a Monday because I think there is potential.
End of Shawn Philosophy 101.

So the day at work, workwise was good.  I think we got quite a lot done and it felt good because we know that Wednesday will be a day to rest.

When we got home we all had a lot of extra energy due to the extra sleep we had Yesterday so we decided that it was time to invent a new sport.  So the other day we got the tabletennis equipment but due to heavy wind in monsoon season (who would have guessed right) playing outside was close to impossible.  So we created a table tennis game for the indoors when you don’t have an actual table tennis table inside…  It goes something like this:

You put four playing cards on the table in the four respective corners, then all you have to do is to hit the cards on the opposite side of the table (well that was the rules when the game started, they became  a lot more intense as the night progressed).  We had a ton of fun.

We also started feeding Gert today.  So Gert is a little spider that we found in our mini garden on day 2.  Gert is a pretty cool spider; he just builds his web every night and then breaks it down again in the morning just before we leave for work.  Gert seriously thought that it was raining Mosquitos by the end of the night…  He/She (we aren’t too sure yet) had a feast.  I will do some research later and try to determine what spider He/She is and then also let you guys know.

That was about it for the eventful things of the day.  Hein didn’t feel too well, but I think that was due to the fact that we basically forgot to eat dinner… that or the Mc Donalds we had for lunch, no one will ever know…

Well that was “Ping Pong Day” and it shall remain that for the rest of the trip.

Day 12 – Mc not SA

Day 12 – Mc not SA

If you know me then you know, then I guess you would know I like sleeping as late as possible on any day that is not a working day, so I stuck to that policy today.  Of course Lourens and Hein didn’t they were up and going way early again and left for a revisit to MG road.

Hein and Lourens both found the shopping/window shopping at MG road to be quite awesome.  They were kind enough to bring a replacement for my laptop bag that got torn: Dell1-Puma0.  By the time Kaishni came over for breakfast we were all about ready for Lunch, so we decided to give Mc Donalds a try…  Kaishni and Hein went for the Spicy Chicken Burger and Lourens went with my choice… the Mc Maharaja meal… which ended up being the “not so smart” move.  The patties on the Mc Maharaja are curry flavoured, for Lourens who doesn’t like curry too much that wasn’t the most awesome experience yet.  We also learned that playing with your camera on the inside of a straw is not the most visually awesome thing yet.

I realized today that I have not mentioned my own name in the blog yet… so for those who don’t know:  Hi I’m Shawn and I’m enjoying India so far.

That was about the sum of the day… we hit bed early and didn’t mind getting in way more than the recommended 8 hours of sleep for the day.

Day 11 - Hard Rock Saturday

Day 11 – 11 Aug

Another Saturday in Pune and we are ready for it.  We got up kind of early and jumped in the car with our (favourite) driver Latif.  He had quite the interesting day planned.

Latif took us to the famous MG road.  We went to about 45 shops, most of them being watch and toy shops.  We also got some bats and balls for table tennis and Lourens and Hein found a shop that sells some awesome wallets.  Then we went to my personal favourite shop so far:  the Guitar shop.  The brands of guitars are not too wide over here (well for this shop at least).  I found some nice looking Takamini guitars… after some inspection though we saw that it is Takamin and not Takamini… I guess the price of 3300 Rupees should have given it away from the start… (+- R550)  I played on some of the guitars they had for about 30 min and then felt the need to leave again, it might have been the smell around the area – one can never be sure around here.

So a few days ago we heard about the Hard Rock Café Pune and we just had to check it out some time or the other.  We made arrangements with one of the guys from the offshore team to meet us there and then left for what we thought might only be a semi okay evening.  Man alive, were we surprized…  The Hard Rock Café in Pune is way awesome.  The people that work there are actual rockers and the music is nothing like Raj vs. the Machine it was actual Rock music.  A small taste of home with an extra 3-5 desibels added for comfort.  They have guitars and signed posters up everywhere and a full drum set mounted on the wall as you enter the Café.  But this came nothing close when compared to the surprize that was waiting for us on the menu.
The Famous 10oz BEEF burger.  Wow is all I can say.  It was one of the closest tastes to home that we have had, and it was awesome to say the least.  I think the King Fisher and taste of Coke instead of Pepsi also helped.  Needless to say we had a very late night, we only got back to our place at around 11h35 and then Rahul had to drive another 35min to get to his place (I am glad I wasn’t him, cause I almost fell straight into bed after the awesome diner).

So Last weekend we went to a place and I said I would update the name later, well the name was: Mahabaleshwa and no I have absolutely no clue what that means.

All in all it was an awesome Saturday (and yes for those who were wondering, Today I have re-discovered the Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U function).

Day 8 - Peace in Pune

Day 8.

Got up… went to work… got back home…  Not so much content at work (that I can mention here anyway).

We saw the bosses for the second time today.  Also they left Pune again today.

Because it was a quiet day we decided to stick to the theme and just chill at home for the night also.  We got some “Strawberry Coke” and chocolates with some popcorn and caught a movie.  The movie was quite awesome though.
Snatch – brilliant because of the accents used in the movie…   Brad Pitt plays the role of a trailer parker – a British trailer parker.  The movie was brilliant and I think we all needed the laugh.

Even though it was a very quiet day, I think it was one of the more fun days so far… Again we got stuck on the South African clock and only went to bed at like 10pm South African time…

Day 7 - Jack Knife

Day 7 – 7th of August

8 am is really a good time of the day to wake up, and socially acceptable in India.  It is also a load better than waking up at 4am.  The week days are not super interesting this side, they tend to be the slower days in a social sense.  We started missing the South African flavour today, so we went for KFC as lunch.  I know, I know KFC is not South African, but it is the closest thing we have to home in a sense of food.
We got the news that it was snowing back home today… I think we heard it like 400 times before lunch.  Considering that it was around 25 degrees Celsius in Pune at 8am with a humidity of 84% we didn’t enjoy hearing about the snow back home.  And yes, snow is not a regular occurrence in Johannesburg… so it is just a little bit sadder than it would have been for someone who is missing Canada or Belgium.

At around 2 I took a walk with some of the guys leaving the rest of the SA team behind.  This was the first time that I couldn’t make a joke in Afrikaans, ‘cause no one would have understood it.  Suddenly I got a glimpse of what the guys around here must be feeling when we talk in our own language when they don’t understand:  The six guys that I took a walk with were talking in Hindi almost the entire time… can I hear you say “Lost in translation”?  It was fun though, and for the first time I went to a shop and got what I was looking for in less than 10min and without explaining it more than once.  Rahul (one of the guys on the development team this side) showed their hot food… not too hot, only very rich in spice.

On the way back, we suddenly noticed that the traffic was at a standstill.  It wasn’t a big problem for us as we were walking, but strange none the less.  Eventually we saw that it was a truck that jack knifed in a very small street.  This caused almost 4 streets to come to a complete standstill.  The people around here are very friendly and helpful so the guys that were standing around quickly helped the driver to get out of the predicament.  What made the scene a little more strange was that everyone just drove off… no police, no traffic officers, no reports to fill in, just curry on with your life…  strange yes; efficient – double yes.

For the rest this was a chilled day (super ‘slang’ I know) but that was this Tuesday in India.

Day 6 - Not so blue Monday

Day 6 – 6 August.

A small South African joke…  “What’s worse than a Monday?... a Monday in India” LoL.  Just kidding guys, India is great…  No seriously, the traffic is not worse on a Monday in regards to any other day of the week; actually I think it might be a better traffic day.

Starting the blog of a Monday with the traffic suggests the honest truth about the day… It was a really, really (one more) really slow day.  Hein and I were still trying to get the framework running on our “new office” PCs.  5 points for us; we are done with it by the end of today.

Today we decided to take India and the street shops by the horns and grab a “vada pav”(sounds like Wada-POW) as a snack before lunch… Kaishni and I couldn’t get anything in afterwards, not because it is a big meal… let’s just say the average (okay 75 persent if you look at our stats) South African stomach wouldn’t have been able to take anything else after that (Hein being the exception, this round) and Lourens chickening out after bite one.  The “vada pav” actually tasted quite good, but the after effects could leave you with a cold sweat on the forehead.
The rest of the day in the office was rather uneventful.  Hein and I went home with a ton of work.  We were seriously busy until almost 12h30…  We started feeling the lack of sleep also. Our systems seem to have adapted to the waking up 3 hours earlier than it should, but the going to bed 3 hours earlier hasn’t yet kicked in.   So we were all a little edgy today… Not in a bad way, just in a “leave me in my corner and I’ll be okay” kind of way.

Like I said, it was a quiet day so the other “news like” thing is that today it started looking like we wouldn’t be visiting Ghoa anymore.  Also I think Lourens is really starting to miss home, but he is still okay.  As for Kaishni, Hein and I, we are still going strong (no kids or spouses to be worried about).  Die verlange sal seker eventually inskop.

Day 5 - Sunday bliss

Day 5.

A beautiful Sunday, and finally a day where nothing was planned…  It kind of feels like we have not had a day of relaxation since we got here…  I took the change to sleep as late as my body allowed me to.  In doing so, I missed out on a trip with our new driver who is apparently sort of a tour guide.

Hein and Lourens didn’t miss on the opportunity to go out for a tour of Pune.  Of course the driver would take them to the one place I would have truly loved to see; the Hard Rock Café.  They also went to a little shop where they found some nice looking Sarees and all the “I was in India” novelties.  A magician (again I’ll say just an unlucky round for me) got Lourens and Hein to participate in his show.  He did some awesome flower tricks together with a disappearing little white ball trick.  I am a little sad that I missed out on seeing it, but I won’t complain for the extra bit of sleep I got in.

We took a walk when they got back and found a small shop which kind of looks like “Milky Lane” back in South Africa.  They had food of which we could pronounce the name and drinks that you would get in an average coffee shop in Sandton/Randburg and even Pretoria.   We got stuck in the nostalgia for a while before heading home to finish up for the “Welcoming of the Big Bosses

The drive to the hotel where we would meet the bosses (I guess bosses isn’t exactly the right term, technically they are managers, but let’s stick with bosses for this version of the story) was super interesting.  Lourens and Hein took us to the shop they saw earlier.  It was as awesome as they punted the place to be, very small but cool.  I found 3 sarees, also one of us found an awesome silver ring.  We also saw a cool little wood-box which seemed to not have an opening spot.  We fiddled around with it for a little while and then saw it had a secret opening… pretty cool craftsmanship.    The last few minutes to the hotel were less impressive and for the first time we had a driver that didn't honk at everything he saw on the road.

At the “Welcoming of the Bosses”:
The speeches were funny and we were deemed “Part of the team”.  I got a chance to test out my Indian accent in front of an Indian crowd… they actually didn’t feel offended and suggested I speak that way more often as it might help people here understand me better.  We heard and told some awesome jokes… apparently it is okay to joke with all sorts of random things here. Haha!
I also got my malaria pills (thanks Peter) and my charger.  I will never hear the end of the forgetting trip… eish.  And no one left any jokes for later…  I have already been warned/reminded not to forget my charger in India.  Thanks guys I won’t.

So all in all a good day, we didn’t get to bed too late, the welcoming was awesome and again we got to see the full hospitality of all the people in our team.
After that we basically sat and talked nonsense for about an hour before going to bed at around 10pm... South African time…

Day 4 – A short walk in the streets of Pune

Day 4 – the 4th of August.

I think that there should be a new rule – Saturday’s shall now be known as “Sleep Late Days”.  Copy right pending.
If that were to be a rule we broke it today.  After a late Friday night, getting up was a little difficult today.  We got on the road, only a 110km drive… which wouldn’t be too bad on a Saturday but when it takes you just over 3 hours I start doubting our sanity levels.  The drive even though long was actually really beautiful.  The greenery this side is really something that could attract a lot of tourism (I think).  About halfway into the drive we decided to stop at a “Halfway stop”; kind of like the one to Durban from Johannesburg.  It doesn’t look quite the same, actually it doesn’t even resemble it in the slightest… it was a tent.   This was one of the cooler things to see in the Culture gap.  People are so comfortable this side and again we saw that shop PR is almost as foreign as Afrikaans around here.
We reached a tonnel which was said to be 1.4km long.  Again if you know the road to Cape Town from Johannesburg this sounds familiar.  The natural beauty is really astounding, and then just after the amazing beauty you find a building that seems to have been part of a war somewhere in the past (and someone is still living in there).

The place we went to visit (name to be supplied as soon as I can find the spelling) resembled something out of a fairy-tale, a fairy-tale with loads of trash on random spots and with no proper bathrooms, but a fairy-tale nonetheless.  Due to the fact that it is Monsoon season this side it is very green yes, but the rain is something that cannot be missed in the mountain area.  We got so wet; it actually looked like the four of us went for a swim with our clothes on.  We made a video of the absolute crazy wetness; I will add a link to the video as a comment later tonight.

Okay so here is something that I found really funny.  When driving in the city there are literally thousands of cars, bikes and scooters all over, but very few accidents.  So at the viewing points you usually find only one or two cars; so it is really a lot more quiet and slow paced than the city. The funny part only comes in here:  We had an accident while at one of the viewing points (someone drove into us from behind); mom don’t worry, nothing major and no-one got hurt.  It was actually such a small thing that our driver got out, looked at the damage and wiped it off with a cloth, got back in the car and drove off.  No hectic processes of calling the cops like in South Africa just carry on with your life and smile.  That is another thing that I find really awesome around here; the guys don’t even know what road rage is, they just carry on and smile… as someone who drives in Sandton and Randburg this doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me, but I think we’ll get there.

On the way back home we stopped at a Jam, Jelly and Chocolate factory/shop/call-it-what-you-want.  We had a taste of the milkshake they make and then got to see how they make it… with jam.  The chocolate got Kaishni’s full attention (I must be honest mine also).  By this stage we didn’t yet notice it, but we forgot to have breakfast and lunch, so I think that is why the chocolate and jam-sweets tasted a little more awesome than reality allows it to be.

The trip up the mountain was partially missed due to our fascination with the extreme beauty of the valley.  The trip down… not so much, don’t get me wrong the beauty was still there, but driving down a mountain at 60km/h is kind of nerve wrecking when there aren’t any traffic rules.  Also the road down looked a little like something from “Tokyo Drift”.  I cannot emphasize enough how glad I am that we didn’t take the drive back in the dark.
The drive back was a little cold, as we got in the car wet from the rain and air conditioners around here are on full time.  I know being cold in India sounds insane… but it really happened (not complaining though, it was still awesome).

Back at the apartment, a short shower and getting into dry clothes sounded like the best and first option.  Then came one of our more intense India experiences:   THE WALK.
We took a walk down the street… sounds easy right… To sum it up, it took Kaishni and myself about 10min to get over one of the crossings (there were four).  Hein and Lourens seem to have adapted to the traffic rules quite quickly.  We used our walk to get some sweets and a board game.  Finally after 8 months (really 8 months) I finally got my hands on some Bakarwadi, and it tasted almost as good as I remember it from 8 months back.
Lourens almost walked into a temple with his shoes on… without even noticing.  “Lourens!! Lourens!!! Kom hier, kom net hier!!” That is how we tried getting him back without people understanding what was happening.

From there we had a few fun rounds of Cluedo, and a second taste of the local beer (nope not as good as a can of Coke I can promise you that).

It doesn’t feel like the blog today is doing the events a load of justice… but I think it is about as close as it can get.

ps.. if it looks like I am a few days behind, I am... but we had two very uneventful days, so I am still scratching for info to supply there.

Day 3, one tenth of the way.

Day 3.

So today started really slow.  Our second day at the India office and still trying to get onto the network successfully.  The day seemed like it was dragging along for a bit until lunch time finally arrived.  So today we felt ready to experience Indian food in India.  We asked the guys for something nice that was close enough to take a walk and experience India in the streets.  After about 20 min of listening and listening again we finally got the directions pinned down.
We took the walk down the road (seriously I think if it was more than 700m it’s a lot).  The road wasn’t too nice to look at; we got to see the thing where there is a beautiful building right next to a squatter camp and then a building site smack in the middle of nowhere.  After getting through the narrow street and past the building site rubble, we finally made it to the restaurant we were looking for.  This is when we got confirmation again that the people around here don’t really care for PR.  The entrance to the place (Chaitanya Parantha’s) is really just a broken piece of concrete also the roof is basically just a plastic cover.  The look of the place doesn't do the food any justice though.  It was awesome.  The amount of spice you can fit into a little piece of dough is really interesting (and in my mind, under rated).  None of us were brave enough to try the “Krut” though.  I think they mentioned that it is a type of plain yogurt.
We were looking for the Parantha with a potato filling, but the menu didn’t have the word potato in it so we just went with the word we know, which is cheese.   Eventually we heard that what we were looking for (or supposed to be looking for) was the word Aloo, which means potato in Hindi.  We couldn’t get any “normal” coke there, so we settled for Pepsi.
The lunch at Chaitanya Parantha’s was exactly 10 times cheaper than the dinner of last night, and not too different in awesomeness.

As soon as we got back to the office we again continued with the “setting up and settling in” activities.  Eventually we went out for a coffee break.  We are still trying to get used to the fact that we don’t make our own coffee or tea, someone else does it for us… not weird at all (please note this is to be read in a sarcastic tone).  At the office they have an awesome balcony where everyone goes for lunch.  On the way out to the balcony there is a huge sign that says “Do not smoke here”.  So while sitting outside we were just chatting and laughing about our fail with skipping mains the night before, Lourens decided to show us all one of his own tricks.  It was a trick wherein he makes a whole sigaret disappear and then reappear.   It was an awesome trick, but one of the guys noticed Lourens taking out the sigaret and immediately called a manager.  We had a good laugh while trying to explain that no one was planning to smoke right under the “No Smoking” sign.

Back inside of the office, one of the things that were really strange to see was the fact that almost no phones ring in the office.  For an average day at the office, I don’t think I would mind that at all.  It was so quiet that I can almost understand how these guys get so much done in a day.

So for the night of day 3, the guys from the office planned a night out in the town with us.  We went to a place called Shisha (which we were told means Mirrors).  So this place was just amazing.  The whole place has a “in the wild” theme to it.  It feels like you are literally walking through a forest to get to your table, obviously a forest with some gold and tables in the way but hey, who counts right?  The food was amazing, and for a country where we “wouldn’t find any beef” (again please note the sarcasm) the steak was really good, and yes I checked, no one felt offended by my eating of the steak. I am trying hard not to fail as bad as the guy from 'Outsourced'.

While sitting in the restaurant Lourens suddenly flew up and ran out to call his wife, he thought that we got too lost in the chatting and that he forgot to call her at an appropriate time.  So it was around 10h15 here when this happened.  He only forgot about one small little detail. In South Africa it was only around 6h45, so she was actually surprised when he called too early. The time difference has actually been messing with all of our minds.  But Lourens got to be the one that made it seem the most funny.

Well that was pretty much it for the day.  We are planning on going out with some of the guys from the office again tomorrow, as it is Saturday the fact that we have to be up at 6 isn’t really sounding too appealing right now, but we heard that it is going to be awesome so we will do it with a smile (not even a fake one).

We also noticed today that Kaishni and Hein are starting to adopt the “head bobble”.  Yes I said it, they dared me to.

Day 2ish - 2nd of august

Day 2.

We decided to wake up a little late today.  I think we needed it after the 24 and 36 hour days we had between the 4 of us.  8am seems to be sleeping late in our minds, but hey it worked so it’s all good.  By 9am the driver was there, we never noticed so we only got outside at like 9h15am.  Lucky for us the drivers (and I think this goes for any driver on the road here) are really calm and chilled out people, so he didn’t mind at all.  We had a slightly nerve wrecking drive to the office - suddenly we were awake enough to notice how chaotic the roads really are here.

We finally arrived at the office after what felt like crawling through a mind field with a sign strapped to our backs saying “WE ARE STRANGE PLEASE LOOK AT US!!!”  As we drove into the office parking we got stopped and they checked the bottom of the car with a strange mirror on a trolley.  This seemed normal in relation to everything we have been experiencing so far so we didn’t ask any questions.
We got to the doors where they noticed that we are foreign (obviously).  The guards were pretty friendly and helpful, one was so helpful that she started talking to Kaishni in Hindi… only one problem with that, Kaishni understands 2 more words in Hindi than I do, so 4.
Inside we saw some strange things again.  At the 7 lifts (yes 7) there were close to 50 people standing there waiting for the lifts to come… they did, eventually.  We asked for directions to the stairs very shortly after that.  Waiting for a lift has never felt that long before though (and this is taking into consideration lunch time at our Sandton office…

After a morning of getting to know the members of the team we will be working with on the project (or rather just seeing the faces and hearing some random names which I will know only by the time we leave).  We also had to introduce ourselves and I am pretty sure our names confused the guys as much as their names confused us.  We got an update on the status of the project…  I think I know what they said.
Okay so I didn’t mention this earlier, so I will now:  The plugs in South Africa are bigger than the plugs in India, so that means our plugs don’t really fit here.  This translated into us not being able to work for almost half the day. (Connection problems still not solved by end of day regarding the network)  So before I go too nerdy on you, we then got to see that we are now the “Scared Shitless Foreigners”.  This happened when none of us were brave enough to dring the water from a filter, but in all fairness everyone back home did scare us off it pretty well.  By the end of today Hein still wasn’t brave enough to try the filter water; I don’t blame him after being sick on day one though.

At this stage we got news that there was an explosion about 15km away from where we live... That was a bit creepy...  Then we heard that the reason for the checking of the underside of the car was all about in the morning.  Only one person got hurt in the explosion though, and only because he picked up a bag that was just laying around.

Next on the discussion list comes Lunch.  One of the guys recommended that we get Chinese…  Can someone say Irony?...  Anyhow, we decided to go with something we know, easy and surprisingly expensive - KFC.  I tried the hot chicken… SA we are not doing too bad on the hot food front, actually I think we might be winning.  The guys who went to get the KFC asked me to drive with them… on a bike.  I don’t think that they don’t know what they are doing, but I still declined the offer.  We might fall not due to the driver or the road, but due to me crunching the driver’s neck if I get a fright.

I am skipping through to the next session of eating, as the rest of the day was just a “try to get the connection working day”.

“Where would you like to have dinner?”  The driver said with a slightly frightened stare.  Yes that’s right we scare some of the guys here.  We don’t really know the places so we asked for his opinion and to make the choice “not too Indian” (nothing wrong with saying that to an Indian man…) LOL.  He made an awesome choice though.  He took us to a place called “Barbeque Nation”.  The place is awesome it has a Casino theme and dinner is a buffet.  You start off with a starter (which you braai in your table).  They only stop bringing the starters when you lower the flag… or if they think you don’t know what the flag means they keep on brining the starters…  Needless to say we didn’t even get to mains, too… much… starters…  Of course we had to end with desert, that was just awesome, nothing spicy and nothing strong just good old Chocolate (maybe some tiramisu also but who counts).
We asked the driver to be there to pick us up at 8pm… we only finished at 8h30 (sorry mister driver but the food was just too awesome).  We plan on taking all the managers there when they come here for their visits.

The day ended shortly after the four of us sitting on the stoep and having a cup of coffee and lots of laughs.  Kaishni shared some secrets; I think she already regrets sharing them though.  And Hein is feeling a ton better (he said so it’s not me making an assumption).

I also saw the first spider this side tonight.  It was a beautiful (beautiful relative to spiders of course) little white one; it kind of resembled a sharp edged pebble.

That’s day two guys.  I hope I didn’t forget anything.

That is the end of the actual day 2.

Day 1 (and if you want to be technical day 2 also)

Okay just to be sure I can say this later:  This is a looooong post.  It will most likely be the longest one for the trip as the day of travel has the most info (so far).

After a morning filled with excitement, eventually we got to the airport to find the other members of the team.  All the hellos and goodbyes were so quick that I almost didn’t notice them taking place.  I think we had a lucky round regarding the time of our flight; the airport didn’t seem to be too busy on a Tuesday afternoon on a working week.  After checking in and getting all the bags loaded the four of us took a walk through the airport on the “duty free” side of things… More like the “Pay Some More” side if you ask me.  I don’t think anything was cheaper than you can find it in and around the city of Johannesburg.

So eventually we got onto the plane.  I had a pretty good seat, way in the back in the row where there are only two chairs.  Lucky for me, Lourens had the seat next to me, so I didn’t have to sit next to someone I didn’t know.  The other 2 members of the team were scattered a bit, but the flight was rather empty so both of them had no one sitting in the seat directly next to them.  Take off was awesome, really smooth and also I think the reality of the travel only set in then.  2 Hours into the flight we started to feel our seats… for the ‘not so good side’ of them.  Then we discovered something super cool on the plane.  You can make inflight calls to other seats…  Yes, yes we did… We called one another just for the fun of it, crazy I know, but we had fun. By hour 7 the four of us were standing by Kaishni’s seat and just chilling together (trying to make the last 2 hours more bearable).  In the time of chatting, I thought about some entertainment by card tricks… this also only lasts a little while when everyone is more tired than the average programmer/technical specialist should be.

The moment the plane stopped… I actually think the moment any plane stops… chaos struck.  Everyone in the entire plane tries to leave at the same time; this doesn’t help much for the guys in a hurry.  Luckily we were pretty relaxed and just waited out the heard.  When we stepped out of the plane we had the fortunate experience of the really, really hot temperature (compared to the winter we just left behind in JHB).  But everyone was kind of friendly and Dubai is an awesome experience in any case.  After 9 hours of flying I don’t think anything can make you feel better about the way you smell and feel regarding your personal hygiene…  That I noticed after changing shirts and getting some fresh deodorant on.  The airport in Dubai is huge… I think it is about (no exaggeration) the size of the town I lived in until age 16 (not a big town trust me).  We walked and walked and…. You get the point.  Next came the awesome experience of Burger King:
We were tired and slightly hungry so the idea of anything eatable sounded like gold, and the idea of having something that you have only ever seen on TV is even better.  But I really think the food there will never be as good as we all imagined it to be with our hungry stomachs and tired minds. (only 30 dollars to realize I will probably never buy it again in my life unless if I should go to the US)

Still in Dubai we were browsing through the prices of watches, chocolates, toys, books and pretty much everything they had just to find that South Africa really isn’t such a bad place (price and variety wise).  Then came the wait… waiting at the gate for your seat group to be called really doesn’t sound like a fun experience, but we had some fun.  For the first time we could speak Afrikaans with no one, except the four of us, to understand what you say… It was amazingly funny.  We were saying random things to people, saying random things about people, just kind of trying to get the time to pass as easily as possible.  Then we saw how (really really) stupid people can be, as they crowded up the entrance to the plane so bad that security had to close the door. (LoL)

This round on the plane there was a lot more people, so our entire little team was split up.  Luckily for a short 4 hour flight the company of my iPod was sufficient.  For some reason I cannot get my mind to quiet down and watch a moving on a plane.  I have been waiting just over 2 months to finally see “The hunger games” and it was available on the plane, I actually read the book also, but the flight together with the movie just didn’t work for me, so no, I still don’t know if the movie ends exactly the same as the book. (No spoilers though).

Landing in Mumbai was quite interesting; people at the airport are not too friendly.  Also the heat knocks you a little bit.  When getting our passports stamped at customs I got asked to fill in the address of the place we are staying in… Okay so the form we filled in with this information was filled in on the plane,  all 4 of us filled it in, in the exact same way, just to be sure we have the same information.  Guess who was the lucky one to be told he doesn’t have enough info regarding the hotel?.. me, and yes I did mention we all had exactly the same info on our forms… I guess he just didn’t like the face or the accent, or I just didn’t look tired enough for their taste.
After getting all the paper work done we went to pick up our luggage.  Kaishni and myself where lucky as our bags came out quite quickly, but Lourens and Hein got mini heart attacks as their bags didn’t show even after the bags stopped coming out.  Eventually we saw a small pile of bags in next to the conveyer belt (this was after about 20min of waiting) in this heap of course we found their bags.  Kaishni and I were super thankful that it was Hein an Lourens, ‘cause we tend to panic about such things.  Also what made it a little more nerve wrecking was the fact that we weren’t too sure if we were supposed to move our own bags around in the airport in Dubai (which we now know, you don’t have to when it is a connecting flight, excuse us we are new to this).

The drive…
This brings us to the drive from the Airport at Mumbai to the place where we are staying in Pune.  The two towns/cities are only 150km apart, so that would mean like an hour’s drive right…. WRONG!  Because the population in Mumbai is so dense the traffic is something of a nightmare.  You have like 80  million (yes you read that right) people moving in different directions, and I seriously think they were all on the road when we got here (this assumption is made due to the fact that we got here about an hour before the average working day starts).  It took us FOUR AND A HALF HOURS to drive the spectacular looking 150km.  The scenery is really beautiful because it is now Monsoon season here.  We stopped once for some cold drink, it was a waste of time as we didn’t yet change our US dollars to Rupies.  So mini-fail there for us, but by the time we got some coke it tasted like heaven in a bottle.

Hein got a bit sick before we even got food, so he decided on skipping dinner and sleeping right through.  The rest of us got some pizza (it tastes the same here, just more expensive than you would imagine pizza in India).  Next came a very interesting grocery shopping… Everything is pretty much the same, but so much different.  You can get pretty much anything that you would get in a South African shop but with some different names and a load of Rupie conversions in your head.  Looking at the prices sometimes scares the daylights out of me, take something like coffee which was priced at 550 Rupies.  You just see the 550 at the bottom and paying R550 for coffee would just be stupid but doing it in Rupies isn’t really so bad once converted (I feel like I should state at this point that it was a bottle of Nescafe Gold and not just a cup).
Then it was back to the temporary home again in the interesting/intense traffic, which would have been followed by our 550 Rupie coffee… if we had mugs.  So this meant a whole extra process of getting cups.  FUN.  Eventually we settled for the day, after an interesting 2 days of travel.

So thus far India has not been treating us too bad.  We haven’t seen any of the famous Monsoon rains yet, but maybe soon enough.

It was a long read I know (and interesting I hope)  but I didn’t mention everything, some things just need to be heard in person.

Just a little side note, the three of us guys have been driving Kaishni insane, so if she doesn’t come back in her normal state of mind… We apologise in advance.

End of day one.
